Pembroke Day 3 Marloes to Dale

I went out like a light last night. I got back to the campsite from the pub at 21:30 and as it was pitch dark, there was nothing to do than get in your sleeping bag. I planned to read a bit but was soon out for the count. I woke up in the dark but feeling as if I had been asleep for a long time. I started tossing and turning and struggled to go back to sleep. After a while I checked my phone to see what time it was and was shocked to see that it was only 02:30!

I then began to play the ‘ Do I need a wee’ game. You know the one, where one side of your brain says “yes” and the other side says “no, go back to sleep”?

Well this game went to extra time. The trouble was, this campsite was very quiet. That meant that sound travels, so you couldn’t just have a quick pee in a hedge, because anyone who was awake could hear what you were doing!

Eventually the yes side of my brain won through and I had the walk of shame. Who knew that zips could be so noisy. Firstly there was the outer sleeping bag, then the inner lining. Once out of that, there was the tent inner and then the fly sheet. By the time I’d opened all those, I think the whole campsite was awake! I wandered over to the toilets and when I got there, all I had was a quick tinkle!

Eventually I got back to sleep, but the rest of the night was quite fitful. My neighbour began to move about at 06:00 but I was buggered if I was getting up that early! I managed to slumber until 07:30, then could stay prostrate no longer!

I packed up my stuff and left the campsite by 09:00. First stop was the local shop/ cafe. Unfortunately, due to COVID the cafe was closed, so no breakfast again! They did however, make me up some sandwiches, so I had half straight away and half at lunchtime.

I rejoined the coast path and noticed yet again the backpack had been filled with lead weights overnight. It took me several short stints before I got it comfortable. The scenery was spectacular. This was Martins Haven, where you could catch a ferry to Skomer Island.

I then walked around Wooltack Point which had some spectacular views looking over to Skomer and Skokholm.

The seals were also nursing their pups on the beach.
I then walked to Marloes Sands and was able to get down to the beach, where I ate my lunch.

I also had a quick dip in the sea, which was somewhat bracing!

The walk over to Dale was quite challenging at times. In places the path had fallen into the sea and the only alternative was a bit dicey!
I arrived in Dale and went to the pub to book an evening meal. They were fully booked and point blank refused to fit me in or let me have a takeaway. Luckily, the yachting club nearby do food and they were more accommodating.
I am staying on a campsite on an old WW2 aerodrome. It’s very basic but will do.
